Donations surge as holidays approach
Anonymous philanthropist donates 1,000 bags of rice

Local philanthropists are making donations to their Jeju City neighbors-in-need as the Lunar New Year approaches.

According to city officials, one anonymous benefactor donated 1,000 bags of rice, worth 25 million won. This particular person has made the donations for 17 years in a row, with the value of contributions now around 450 million won.

Other people are helping out, too. One of them is Lee Myung-gu, a dried fish merchant in the Jeju City Five-day Market. Lee has donated 100 bags of rice to those in need for the tenth year.

City officials plan to distribute all of the support to the people who need it most before the holidays.

설 앞두고 나눔의 손길 이어져

설 명절을 앞두고 제주시에 쌀과 후원금을 기탁하는 독지가들이 줄을 잇고 있습니다.

제주시에 따르면 최근 익명의 독지가가 어려운 이웃에 전달해 달라며 2천500만원 상당의 쌀 1천포대를 기탁했습니다.

특히 이 독지가는 17년간 지속적으로 기부하고 있으며 지금까지 기부액수가 4억5천만원에 이르고 있습니다.

이와함께 제주시 오일장에서 건어물 가게를 운영하는 이명구씨도 10년째 쌀 100포대를 기탁하는 등 나눔의 손길이 이어지고 있습니다.

제주시는 후원물품들을 설 명절 전에 평소 지원이 잘 되지 않은 곳을 우선으로 배부할 예정입니다.
