New Year’s rituals in area communities
160 ceremonies scheduled through mid-February

Area communities will perform rituals in February to wish for well-being and prosperity in the new year.

The first of about 160 rites will be the “(해신) Haeshin Rite” in Hwabuk 1-dong on Wednesday. The last are scheduled for mid-February.

(납읍리) Nabeup-ri’s ceremony, which is an intangible cultural asset, will be on Sunday, and (송당리) Songdang-ri, (구좌읍) Gujwa-eup will perform its ritual next Thursday.

Area villages traditionally hold these types of services within the first month of the year, according to the lunar calendar. There are many types. Some honor the gods of the sea or the land, others are held in the hopes of a big catch in the coming year.

다음달까지 160여 개 마을제 봉행

정유년 새해 마을의 무사안녕과 풍요를 기원하는 포제가 다음달 마을별로 잇따라 열립니다.

우선 다음달 1일 화북1동 해신제를 시작으로 다음달 중순까지 160여 개 마을에서 봉행됩니다.

무형문화재로 지정된 애월읍 납읍리 마을제는 다음달 5일, 구좌읍 송당리 마을제는 9일 열립니다.

제주에서는 예로부터 새해 정월을 맞아 신에게 세배하는 마을제를 지내왔으며 마을의 특성을 반영해 해신제와 토신제, 풍어제 등으로 봉행됩니다
