Education ministry expanded account of Jeju April Third Incident

The education ministry has added more information about the April Third Incident to its new state-authored history textbook.

The ministry unveiled the final version of the book Wednesday. Critics say earlier drafts lacked sufficient information about the incident.

The final version includes revisions they wanted.

The ministry corrected the name of the April Third Special Law, which was incorrectly stated in the initial drafts. It also added a description of what is written on the victims’ ancestral tablets enshrined in the Jeju April Third Peace Park.

Finally, the text states that there were innocent victims of the incident and that after the incident people attempted to uncover the truth of what had happened.

국정교과서 최종본 '4·3사건' 일부 보완

국정 역사교과서 내용 중 논란이 됐던 제주 4.3 관련 기술 부분이 보완됐습니다.

교육부가 오늘(31일) 공개한 국정 역사교과서 최종본에는 지난해 발표된 현장 검토본에서 수렴한 의견이 반영됐습니다.

주요 보완 내용으로는 틀기게 표기된 제주 4.3 관련 특별법 명칭이 정정됐고 제주 4.3 평화 공원에 안치된 희생자의 위패 내용을 수록하는 등 관련 기술을 보완했습니다.

교육부는 또 국정 역사교과서 집필기준에서 '당시 무고한 희생자가 생겼으며 이후 진상규명 노력이 있었음에 유의한다'고 명시했습니다.
