11 traffic-related deaths last month

Nearly a dozen people were killed last month in traffic-related accidents.

Provincial police put the death toll at 11. That’s nearly three times the figure from January 2016 which was only four. Eight people were killed the previous two Januarys.

About half of the people killed last month were pedestrians. Police place most of the blame in those accidents on careless driving.

Police say they will do more to keep unsafe drivers off the road, beef up public awareness about the need to drive safely, and install more safety facilities and equipment.

올들어 사망교통사고가 급증하고 있어 운전자들의 각별한 주의가 요구되고 있습니다.

제주지방경찰청에 따르면 지난한달간 제주도내 교통사고 사망자는 11명에 이르고 있습니다.

이같은 사망자수는 지난해 같은기간 4명에 비하면 3배 가까이, 2014년과 2015년 1월 8명에 비해서도 37% 증가한 것입니다.

특히 지난달 발생한 사망교통사고의 절반가량은 보행자 사고였고, 대부분 운전자의 부주의에 의한 것으로 드러났습니다.

경찰은 앞으로 교통사고를 줄이기 위해 홍보활동과 단속을 강화하는 한편 각종 안전시설물을 확대 설치할 계획입니다.
