Province adopts ‘living wage’
Will be higher than official minimum wage

The provincial government will introduce a new “living wage” this year.

It is designed to boost the quality of life for low-income earners. Local officials say they will set the wage at the highest point in the nation.

The first workers to benefit will be those at agencies, organizations, and companies in which the government has invested. Officials will then expand the scope of the policy to include the private sector.

63 local governments across the country have already adopted such a policy. On average, they have set the living wage at 7,725 won per an hour, which is 15 percent higher than the official minimum wage.

올해부터 제주에서도 생활임금제가 도입됩니다.

제주특별자치도는 저임금 근로자들의 삶의 질 향상을 위해 생활 임금제를 시행하고,
전국 최고 수준의 생활 임금을 책정하기로 했습니다.

이번 제도는 제주도의 출자출연기관 근로자부터 우선 시행하며 점차 민간분야까지 확대할 계획입니다.

생활임금제는 현재 전국 63개소의 광역.기초단체에서 도입해 운영하고 있으며
시간당 평균 7천 725원으로 최저임금에 비해 15% 높게 책정되고 있습니다.
