‘Shoddy construction caused accident’
8 workers injured last month at Jeju Myths and History Theme Park

Investigators say last month’s collapse of a concrete mold at the Jeju Myths and History Theme Park was due to shoddy construction.

The accident injured eight workers. The Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency investigated the case and submitted its findings to the Jeju Labor Improvement Center, which is part of the Gwangju branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor. Officials determined the section of work that collapsed lacked sufficient reinforcement.

The center will study the findings as it determines how to punish the contractor in accordance with the occupational safety and health act.

Police have also launched a probe. Officers are investigating all of those involved, including the construction supervisor, to figure out if negligence was involved in the accident.

지난 달 발생한 신화역사공원 거푸집 붕괴사고는 부실공사 때문이라는 안전보건공단의 조사 결과가 나왔습니다.

안전보건공단은 사고현장을 정밀 조사한 결과 거푸집 하중을 지탱하는 보강재의 수량이 설계 보다 적게 들어간 사실을 확인하고 광주지방고용노동청 제주근로개선센터에 붕괴 원인에 대한 의견서를 제출했습니다.

제주근로개선지도센터는 공단 의견서를 토대로 사업장에 산업안전보건법 등에 근거한 처벌 여부를 결정할 방침입니다.

한편 경찰은 감리자 등 공사 관계자들을 상대로 업무상 과실치상 혐의 여부를
수사하고 있습니다.
