Nearly 3,000 not using farmland for agricultural purposes

Local authorities say there are nearly 3,000 people on the island who are not using their registered farmland for agricultural purposes.

Research by Jeju City and Seogwipo turned up 2,900 such landowners. They control some 400 hectares of land that’s split up into roughly 38-hundred plots.

Jeju City has given the landowners in its jurisdiction until March 10th to respond to the allegations of farmland misuse. Seogwipo has given those in southern regions until March third.

After hearings on the matter, if officials reject the landowners’ reasons for not using their land for farming, the land will have to be sold within one year.

'무늬만 농사꾼' 처분대상 3천명 육박

제주에 있는 농지를 농업경영에 이용하지 않은 농가가 약 3천명에 이르는 것으로 조사됐습니다.

제주시와 서귀포시가 농지이용실태를 조사한 결과 취득한 목적대로 이용하지 않은 것으로 확인된 농가는 2천 900여 명으로 집계됐습니다.

필지 수로는 3천 800여 필지, 면적은 440여 헥타르에 달했습니다.

제주시는 다음달 10일까지, 서귀포시는 다음달 3일까지 이들 농가로부터 조사 내용에 대한 의견을 받은 뒤 청문절차를 거쳐 처분에 들어갈 예정입니다.

농업경영에 이용하지 않은 농지가 정당한 사유에 해당하지 않으면 1년 이내에 의무적으로 처분해야 합니다.
