Korea-Japan Fisheries Agreement fell apart in June

Local fishermen are demanding Seoul do something to improve their situation after the Korea-Japan Fisheries Agreement fell apart.

The failure to sign the agreement in June means they are no longer allowed to fish for hairtail in Japan’s exclusive economic zone. During a Monday press conference from the provincial office, members of the Jeju Fishing Association said that has devastated their livelihoods.

They say nothing has been done to the address the issue and so they called on the national government to formulate a way forward.

지난해 7월 한일어업협상 결렬 이후 지금까지 이렇다할 후속조치가 없는 가운데 제주어민들이 이에 대한 대책마련을 요구하고 나섰습니다.

한일어업협상 결렬로 일본측 배타적 경제수역에서 갈치조업에 나서지 못해 연승어업인들의 경제적 피해가 막심하다고 주장했습니다.

특히 한일 정부간 이렇다할 협상 기미가 보이지 않고 있다며 정부의 적극적인 대처와 함께 적절한 지원대책을 요구했습니다.
