‘Jeju Air shouldn’t fly to Fukushima’
Local environmental group says risks are too high

Civic groups in Jeju are calling for Jeju Air to withdraw its decision to operate non-scheduled flights to Fukushima, Japan.

Fukushima is where a tsunami caused nuclear meltdowns and the release of radioactive materials in 2011.

In a statement, the Jeju Environmental Movement Association criticized the airline’s decision to start service there, arguing it is still a hazardous region that poses potential problems for human health. The association argued operating flights there infringes on flight attendants’ work and health rights.

It also claimed the flights could cause collateral damage here in Korea, so it urged the provincial government, a shareholder in Jeju Air, to do something to prevent flight service to Fukushima.

제주환경운동연합은 성명을 내고 후쿠시마현은 원전 사고 이후 여전히 건강상 문제가 발생할 수 밖에 없는 지역으로 분류되는데도 제주항공이 운항을 결정한 것은
승무원의 건강권과 노동권을 유린하는 행위라고 비판했습니다.

아울러 항공기 운항으로 국내 2차 피해가 우려되는 만큼 운항 결정을 철회하고
제주항공 주주인 제주도정도 운항 중단을 위해 적극 나서야 한다고 강조했습니다.
