Plan to preserve genetic material from Jeju black pigs, cattle
Samples will be stored in DNA bank at Jeju National University
The provincial government plans to preserve genetic material from Jeju black pigs and black cattle in order to preserve the two species from livestock ailments like foot-and-mouth disease.
Both species are designated natural monuments.
According to the plan, the Jeju Provincial Livestock Institute will collect somatic cells from 19 black bulls and three black pigs.
Those samples will be handed over to Professor Park Se-pil and his research team at the Jeju National University Center for Stem Cell Research. The researchers will freeze the samples at 198 degrees below zero and permanently preserve them in the institute’s DNA bank.
