Jeju to host UNESCO meeting in December
1,000 attendees expected

Jeju will host the 12th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage at the end of this year.

The head of the Cultural Heritage Administration visited the provincial office Friday with the certificate from UNESCO designating Jeju haenyeo culture as intangible heritage. While here, (나선화) Rha Sun-hwa handed over the certificate to Governor Won Heeryong and announced the decision regarding this year’s meeting.

UNESCO claims some 170 member countries. Roughly 1,000 experts from across the globe are expected at the meeting, which will be from December third to the eighth.

Local officials began laying the groundwork for hosting the event at the end of last year. Among other things, they inspected the International Convention Center to ensure its suitability for the gathering.

나선화 문화재청장은 오늘 제주도청을 방문해 제주해녀문화 유네스코 등재 인증서를 원희룡 제주도지사에게 전달하고 나서 인사말을 통해 12월 예정된 제12차 유네스코 인류무형유산보호 정부간위원회 회의를 제주에서 개최하기로 했다고 밝혔습니다.

전 세계 170여 국가의 유네스코와 문화전문가 1천여 명이 참가하는 이번 회의는
오는 12월 3일부터 8일까지 열립니다.

제주도는 지난 연말부터 유치 작업을 벌여왔는데 문화재청은 지난달 제주국제컨벤션센터 등 행사 관련 시설등에 실사를 벌였습니다.
