Jeju Air opts not to fly to Fukushima
Company bows to public pressure

Jeju Air has bowed to public pressure and canceled its plan to fly to Fukushima, Japan, where a tsunami caused nuclear meltdowns and the release of radioactive materials in 2011.

Critics blasted the original decision to start the service when it was announced.

In a company-wide email on Friday, Jeju Air president (최규남) Choi Kyu-nam said he had decided not to proceed with the planned nonscheduled flights in order to relieve the worries of staff and their families.

He added that the company would begin flying to Sendai, Japan, instead, and thereby allow Fukushima citizens the chance to visit Korea.

제주항공이 방사능 논란이 일고 있는 일본 후쿠시마 운항 계획을 취소했습니다.

최규남 제주항공 사장은 오늘 직원들에게 보낸 이메일에서 후쿠시마 부정기편 운항 계획과 관련해 직원 가족들의 걱정을 덜어주기 위해 후쿠시마 전세기 운항 계획을 취소하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

그러면서 후쿠시마 시민의 한국 관광을 위해 취항지를 후쿠시마공항 대신 센다이공항으로 변경하기로 했다고 덧붙였습니다.

한편 제주항공은 다음 달 18일과 20일 후쿠시마공항에서 인천으로 들어오는 부정기편을 운항한다는 계획이 알려지자 방사성 물질 노출을 우려하는 목소리가 제기됐습니다.
