Residents thwart start of work on new waste disposal center
Critics claim province hasn’t honored agreement

The provincial government has failed to begin work on a new waste disposal center in Dongbok-ri, Jeju City.

Local officials planned to start the job Thursday by setting up a construction trailer at the site for use as an office. Area residents blocked the access road with a dump truck, saying the government was trying to start the project without fulfilling its agreement to resolve issues relating to the relocation of area hog farms.

The government gave up on its plan to start work and agreed to sit down with area residents to discuss the problems.

The province has earmarked 200 billion won for the center, which will include a landfill and an incineration plant. Work was scheduled to begin last November and be finished by the end of 2019.

제주시 구좌읍 동복리의 제주환경자원순환센터 착공이 불발됐습니다.

제주특별자치도는 오늘 오전 현장사무실 설치를 시작으로 제주환경자원순환센터 공사에 들어갈 예정이었습니다.

하지만 일부 주민들이 협약내용인 양돈장 이설문제를 해결하지 않은 채 공사를 시작하려고 한다며 차량을 이용해 진입로를 봉쇄하며 반발했습니다.

결국 제주도는 지역주민들과 이 문제를 차후에 논의하기로 하고 오늘 예정된 공사를 포기했습니다.

제주환경자원순환센터는 당초 지난해 11월에 착공해 오는 2019년까지 사업비 2천억원을 투입해 매립장과 소각장 시설을 조성한다는 계획이었습니다.
