Cedar pollen is major allergen

A Jeju National University institute has issued a cedar pollen warning for the spring.

The JNU Research Center for Environment and Health cedar pollen is the main cause for many allergies, including conjunctivitis and atopic dermatitis. Pollen levels are at their highest at the beginning of March.

Center representatives advise wearing a mask that blocks the pollen and avoiding outside activities between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when pollen levels are highest.

According to the center’s skin tests, the percentage of youth with allergic reactions to cedar pollen went from 18 percent in 2008 to 24 percent in 2013.

알레르기 원인 '삼나무 꽃가루' 주의 당부

제주대학교 의학전문대학원 환경보건센터가 봄철 삼나무 꽃가루 주의를 당부했습니다.

환경보건센터에 따르면 아토피 피무염과 천식, 알레르기성 결막염 등의 주요 항원으로 지목되고 있는 삼나무 꽃가루는 이달 초 최고치를 보일 것으로 전망됩니다.

이에따라 꽃가루 알레르기가 있는 경우 가급적 마스크를 착용하고 꽃가루가 가장 많이 날리는 오전 10시에서 오후 2시 사이에는 실외활동을 피해 줄 것을 당부했습니다.

환경보건센터 연구결과 제주지역 소아청소년 알레르기 피부반응검사에서 꽃가루에 양성반응을 보인 경우는 2008년 18%, 2013년 24%로 크게 증가세를 보이고 있습니다.
