Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • . Jeju: A to Z (Stone Grandfathers)
  • The subject of this week’s Jeju: A to Z is the dolhareubang, a stone statue found nearly everywhere on the island. As Todd Thacker explains, these cultural icons have a wide historical and modern significance. [Report] Even if you’re just arriving at Jeju International Airport, travellers here are guaranteed to spot the sometimes stern, sometimes smiling faces of black basalt stone statues. [Slug CG] Commonly placed at building entrances, roads, bridges Pairs of Jeju’s venerable stone grandfathers, or Dolhareubang (돌하르방) are ever-present and ever-vigilant on either side of building entrances, roads, and bridges all over the island. They are of various shapes and sizes -- ranging from under a meter in height to 1.8 meters tall -- but their essential design is the same. They have stubby noses, wear a conical hat, and wrap their arms around their ample bellies. [Slug CG] Protect communities, individuals against misfortune For centuries islanders have believed they served as guardians for the welfare and prosperity of individuals and communities. They also served as boundary markers and entry control signposts. A third function was shamanistic in nature. It was a Jeju Governor by the name of Kim Mong-gyu (김몽규) who in 1754 ordered that stone grandfathers be carved and distributed around the island. [Slug CG] Officially named ‘Dolhareubang’ in 1971 Since then, these statues have been known by many different names, but in 1971 the Jeju Cultural Properties Committee selected “Dolhareubang” as its official name. Now, these volcanic stone statues have become a well-recognized symbol of Jeju, its people, and stone culture. [Slug CG] Todd Thacker They have also been incorporated into the branding of Jeju agricultural and tourist products and services, as well as becoming a best-selling tourist souvenir. Jeju City has spent 670 million won so far this year to remove 150 tons of it. There’s still another 145 tons of the unsightly mess strewn across the shore, though. To clean it up, the city will send out members of the Clean Jeju Ocean volunteers and public workers to remove all kinds of shoreline waste, including the devil weed. Every year, some 20,000 tons of waste, including seaweed, washes up on island shores. Sixty-five percent of it is concentrated in Jeju City.
