‘Presidential campaigns should reflect Jeju’s needs’
Local officials fear island issues could be ignored

The presidential election is scheduled for May, so local officials say there is an urgent need to get candidates to reflect Jeju-related pledges in their election platforms.

Political parties will begin choosing their candidates at the end of March.

Most have not announced their specific schedules for doing so, but the Minjoo Party of Korea is planning to allow hopefuls to start stumping March 27th. A local event is planned for April third.

Locals are worried, however, that the island and its needs could be neglected. They fear the parties will focus their campaigns on heavily populated mainland regions, especially given the limited time before voters head to the polls.

The provincial government has released a list of 23 proposals that it wants presidential candidates to agree to. They include securing constitutional status for Jeju’s semi-autonomy and expanding tax exemptions.

제19대 대통령선거가 오는 5월에 실시될 것으로 예상되면서 유력후보에 대한 제주공약 반영이 시급한 현안으로 떠오르고 있습니다.

각 정당에 따르면 오는 5월 대선을 앞두고 이달말 부터 후보 선출을 위한 경선 등 본격적인 일정이 시작될 전망입니다.

대부분의 정당이 아직까지 구체적인 일정을 확정하지 못하고 있는 가운데 더불어민주당은 오는 27일부터 후보 유세를 시작하고 다음달 3일, 제주에서 진행할 예정입니다.

하지만 일정이 짧은 탓에 유권자수가 많은 지역을 중심으로 선거운동을 펼칠 수 밖에 없어 자칫 제주는 소외되지 않을까 우려되고 있습니다.
