Local parents shell out 12.4% more for private lessons last year
Second highest growth in nation

Jeju parents spent a lot more last year on private lessons for their children outside of regular school.

Statistics Korea and the education ministry surveyed the private lesson fees paid by parents of elementary, middle, and high school students. On average, they spent 226,000 won per month here on the island.

That’s 12.4 percent more than the year before, and that was the second highest growth in the nation. Parents in the mainland city of Sejong spent 20.5 percent more last year.

Here in Jeju, spending for middle school students was the highest, at an average of 269,000 won. For elementary children it was 228,000, and then for high school students, 183,000 won.

제주 사교육비 지출 증가율 전국 2위

지난해 제주지역의 사교육비 지출이 크게 늘어난 것으로 나타났습니다.

통계청이 교육부와 함께 지난해 제주를 비롯한 전국의 초중고등학교 학부모를 대상으로 사교육비 지출실태를 조사한 결과 제주의 경우 한달에 22만 6천원으로 조사됐습니다.

이같은 사교육비는 전년도의 20만원에 비해 12.4% 늘어난 것으로 세종시 20.5%에 이어 전국에서 두번째 높은 증가율을 기록했습니다.

학교급별로 보면 중학생이 26만 9천원으로 가장 많고 초등학생 22만 8천원,
고등학생이 18만 3천원으로 조사됐습니다.
