Haenyeo earning more from cultivated gulfweed
Sales projected to hit \30m this year

The island’s women divers are starting to earn more income through cultivated gulfweed.

The Jeju Marine Fisheries Institute says the gulfweed grown in the Jongdal-ri fishery is of good quality, so it is fetching a good price.

If the current trend continues, sales will hit 30 million won this year. That’s six times last year’s five million won.

Once seeds are planted, haenyeo can harvest gulfweed annually for between three and four years. It also spreads very well in the rocks of that region, so researchers say it can be a reliable source of income for the women.

이같은 추세라면 올해 매출은 3천만원까지 올라 지난해 500만원의 6배에 이를 전망입니다.

특히 종자를 한번만 심어도 최대 3-4년간 매년 수확이 가능하고 주변 암반에 재생산 효과도 큰 것으로 조사돼 앞으로 해녀들의 새로운 소득원으로 주목받고 있습니다.
