‘National authorities must completely resolve issues’
Local officials urge action in advance of April Third Incident anniversary

The provincial government and local organizations are insisting the national government and the National Assembly resolve all remaining issues related to the Jeju April Third Incident.

Governor Won Hee-ryong, council Chair (신관홍) Sin Koan-hong, Superintendent of education (이석문) Lee Seok-mun, and President of the association of April Third Incident victims (양윤경)Yang Yoon-gyeong held a joint press conference Tuesday in the run up to the 69th anniversary of the incident. They asked national authorities to make the resolution of outstanding issues, including victim compensation, a priority.

The local representatives emphasized the need to move beyond the painful memories and create an era dedicated to peace and human rights.

The 69th memorial ceremony for victims begins at ten in the morning on April third at the April Third Peace Park.

The province also designated the 20 days between Tuesday, March 21st and April 10th as a commemoration period.

제주도와 제주 4·3 단체 등이 4·3 문제의 완전한 해결을 위해 정부와 국회가 나설 것을 촉구했습니다.

원희룡 제주도지사와 신관홍 제주도의회 의장, 이석문 제주도교육감, 양윤경 제주 4·3 유족회장 등은 오늘(21일) 오전 제주도청 기자실에서 제주4·3 제69주년에 즈음한 공동기자회견을 갖고 아직 4·3 희생자 배상 문제를 비롯해 많은 과제가 남아 있는 만큼 정부와 국회의 지속적인 관심과 지원을 당부했습니다.

그러면서 이제는 아픈 기억을 넘어 평화와 인권시대를 만들어야 한다고 강조했습니다.

한편, 제69주년 4·3 희생자 추념식은 다음달 3일 오전 10시 제주 4·3 평화공원에서 봉행되며,

제주도는 오늘(21일)부터 다음달 10까지 20일 동안을 추념기간으로 정해 운영합니다.
