Jeju mountaineering group sets off for Himalayas
6-member expedition plans to summit Makalu mid-May

A local mountaineering group has a long-term goal of summiting all 14 Himalayan peaks that are higher than 8,000 meters, and it left the island March 27th to climb Makalu.

(이창백) Lee Chang-baek is leading the expedition, and Gang Jong-jin is the climbing captain. They are joined by Oh Kyeong-ah, Kim Young-yong, Jo Moon-young, and Kim Dong-jin.

Makalu, the fifth highest of the 14 peaks, stands at 8,463 meters.

The team will set up a base camp by April seventh at Tangmar, which sits at an elevation of 4,800 meters. They will get acclimatized to the altitude and train over the following month or so before making their push to the summit in mid-May.

8천m급 히말라야 14좌 봉우리 완등에 도전하는 제주산악 원정대가 마칼루에 오르기 위해 오늘(27일) 제주를 출발했습니다.

이번 원정대는 이창백 원정대장과 강종진 등반대장 그리고 오경아, 김영용, 조문용, 김동진 등 모두 6명이 참가합니다.

마칼루는 해발 8천463미터로 히말라야 8천 미터급 봉우리 가운데 다섯 번째로 높습니다.

원정대는 다음달 7일까지 4,800m 지점인 탕마르에 베이스캠프를 차리고 고소 적응 훈련을 한 뒤, 오는 5월 중순 마칼루 정복에 나설 계획입니다.
