Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Rising Retail Prices
  • Prices in Jeju for many food items are rising lately and they don’t look likely drop anytime in the near future. Mike Laidman reports. Report [slug] Dongmun Market in Jeju City Prices at traditional markets are usually a little bit lower than at supermarkets, but recently, shoppers are spending less because of increases. INTERVIEW Jeon Lee-ok / Shopper, Dongmun Market I used to come here every day, but because of rising prices I now often go to supermarkets. Fish caught around Jeju, like mackerel, are too expensive and most of the fish at this market are imported. Prices that first started soaring due to the nationwide outbreak of bird flu haven't budged, with chicken still on the rise. Vegetable prices that increased because of last year’s early heat wave and tropical storm have yet to return to normal levels, too. Green onions have increased 58% to 2,860 won per kilogram over the last 12 months alone. Cabbages, meanwhile, have jumped 52% over the same period. Prices of farm produce like radish, chives and carrot are 60 percent higher than them in 2016. As local fishermen see fewer catches, fish prices have also risen. Looking at fish, hairtail has increased from 18,800 won to 22,000 won per kilogram over the last 12 months. Over the same period, squid is up 61% to 7,600 won per kilogram. With consumers spending less and less, merchants can’t do much but sigh. INTERVIEW Choi Gyeong / Merchant, Dongmun Market Three hairtail used to be 50,000 won, now you can only get two for that. Shoppers simply aren’t choosing to buy them. Last month, rising necessity prices in Jeju were the highest in Korea at 2.8%, but this actually translates to an even larger 3.3% in perceived increase to shoppers. Looking ahead, prices are not likely to drop anytime soon. Mike Laidman, KCTV
