The province is planning a brand new urban area along with an infrastructure expansion near Jeju International Airport. Area residents have expressed a lot of interest in the project, as well as a few reservations. Joseph Kim has the details.

Integrated transfer center scheduled for completion in 2020
The integrated transfer center near the Jeju International Airport is a major component of the province’s public transportation system overhaul.
For the convenience of airport and public transport passengers, the center will be built on 160,000 square meters of land near the airport by 2020.
Along with the project, the island is planning a new town near the integrated transfer center.

Province’s plan includes development near airport
The province includes the urbanization of land near the airport in its 2025 blueprint for city management.
A 1,500,000 square meter parcel of land, located in the southern area of the airport that covers (용담) Yongdam 2-dong and (도두) Dodu-dong is considered for the project.
Most of the land is currently a green belt.
According to the plan, the new town will have residential, commercial and cultural facilities.

Area residents ‘interested’
Area residents expressed interest in the project at the information session held by the province in (용담) Yongdam-dong.
They checked whether their land is included in the project site and how much the province will compensate them for their land.

The government will compensate for the land, but I heard that half of the compensation would be paid by tax. I cannot fully support the project.

Area residents also requested more lax regulations for construction in the area by fully considering the decades-long noise pollution from the airport.

The province should relax regulations in Yongdam-dong near the Coast Road to allow for the construction of nice new buildings.

However, the province said it hasn’t decided the specific location of the project and compensation plan yet.

Province still undecided on details
The province added that input from area residents will be considered as much as possible when deciding the location and devising an acceptable compensation plan.
The province will commission an institution to do the work.

The province designated the planned site as a Land Transaction Permission Zone, which entails greater scrutiny of land sales, or a green belt to prevent speculation and land price increases this month.
