Man in custody for destruction of protected land
Police say suspect planned to build 12 houses near Manjanggul Cave

Jeju Municipal Police say a 57-year-old real estate developer did illegal work to protected land near Manjanggul Cave.

They have taken the man, identified by his surname Lee, into custody and applied for an arrest warrant.

Police say he began last August levelling out the land and pulling out pine and other trees in the area without first getting permission to do so from the Cultural Heritage Administration and Jeju City. The area in question is a 45-hundred-square-meter plot in Haengwon-ri, Gujwa-eup.

Lee allegedly drew up false real estate contracts to divide the plot and build a dozen single-family houses on it.

제주특별자치도 자치경찰단은 만장굴 주변 '역사문화환경보존지역'에서 불법 토목공사와 형질변경으로 산림을 훼손한 혐의로 부동산 개발업자인 57살 이 모씨를 붙잡아 구속영장을 신청했습니다.

경찰에 따르면 이 씨는 문화재청의 현상변경허가와 행정시의 산지전용 허가를 받지 않은 채 지난해 8월부터 중장비를 이용해 '역사문화환경보존지역'인 만장굴 주변 구좌읍 행원리 4천 900여제곱미터 부지의 소나무와 잡목을 뽑아 땅속에 묻고 평탄작업을 한 혐�畇求�.

특히 이 씨는 해당 토지에서 단독주택 12개동을 지어 분양할 목적으로 허위 부동산 매매계약서를 작성하고 토지를 분할한 것으로 드러났습니다.
