‘Airlines raising fares despite huge earnings’
We Seong-gon wants investigation into possible collusion

One of Jeju’s representatives at the National Assembly says Korean airlines are raising fares despite hauling in massive profits last year.

According to Minjoo Party lawmaker (위성곤) We Seong-gon, Jeju Air had an operating profit of 58.7 billion won last year, up from 51.4 billion the year before. Jin Air’s operating profit soared from 29.7 billion won to 52.3 billion over the same period.

Meanwhile, Asiana Airlines plans to raise fares by up to 5.7 percent beginning April 18th, despite its operating profit ballooning by over 200 billion won last year to 234.5 billion.

Lawmaker We says an investigation is needed to see if the airlines colluded because they are all raising prices by similar amounts at a similar time.

막대한 영업이익 불구 요금인상 강행

항공사들이 막대한 영업이익에도 불구하고 요금인상을 강행하는 것으로 분석됐습니다.

더불어민주당 위성곤 의원에 따르면 대표적인 저가항공인 제주항공의 경우 영업이익이 2015년 514억원에서 지난해 587억원으로, 진에어는 297억원에서 523억원으로 증가한 것으로 나타났습니다.

또 오는 18일부터 최고 5.7%의 요금인상을 추진하는 아시아나항공 역시 지난해 영업이익이 2천 345억원으로 전년에 비해 2천억원 이상 증가한 것으로 조사됐습니다.

위 의원은 특히 항공사들이 비슷한 시기에 비슷한 수준으로 요금을 인상하고 있어 담합여부에 대한 조사도 필요하다고 주장했습니다.
