Marine ecosystem off Gangjeong gets clean bill of health
Damage to soft corals only problem detected

Researchers say the marine ecosystem off the coast of Korea’s newest naval base in Gangjeong is healthy.

The Jeju Ocean and Fisheries Institute commissioned the Eco ENB Corporation last May to study the ocean environment in the area, including the protected species that live there.

Despite the general clean bill of health, researchers reported some soft coral damage in waters around Seogeondo and the Gangjeong lighthouse.

Local officials plan to study the health of the marine ecosystem off the coast of Gangjeong over a three-year period.

강정마을 앞바다 해양생태 '양호'

해군기지가 건설된 서귀포시 강정마을 앞바다의 해양생태가 양호한 것으로 조사됐습니다.

제주도해양수산연구원은 에코이엔비에 의뢰해 지난해 5월부터 1년 동안 강정 해역을 조사한 결과 해양과 생태환경, 보호 대상 해양생물상이 대부분 양호했다고 밝혔습니다.

다만 강정등대와 서건도 해역의 연산호 군락은 일부 소실된 것으로 확인됐습니다.

제주도는 강정 해역의 연차별 생태 변화를 파악하기 위해 3년 동안 해양생태환경 조사를 실시하기로 했습니다.
