Change to birth certificate regulations
Babies’ names can include mix of Korean, Chinese characters

Parents now have more leeway in how their baby’s name appears on his or her birth certificate.

Jeju City says revisions to family registration regulations went into effect this month. The changes include the acceptance of names that include both Korean and Chinese characters on birth certificates.

A court’s permission is, however, required to change characters on an existing birth certificate from Korean to Chinese or vice versa.

출생신고 성명란 한글·한자 혼용 가능

출생신고를 할 때 한자 성명란에 한글과 한자를 혼합해 사용할 수 있게됐습니다.

제주시는 이 같은 내용의 가족관계 등록 예규가 최근 개정돼 이달부터 시행에 들어갔다고 밝혔습니다.

이에따라 한자가 없는 순수 우리말 이름을 한자를 혼합해 출생신고를 할 수 있게됩니다.

다만 출생신고 이후에 한글 또는 한자로 일부 변경하려면 법원의 개명허가를 받아야 합니다.
