‘Seaweed likely coming from Chinese farming operation’
Mass quantities of ‘devil weed’ wash up on local shores yearly

A researcher has concluded that the unsightly seaweed that invades local waters each year may be farmed seaweed from China.

(좌민석) Jwa Minseok, of the Jeju Research Institute, recently released a report on the likely cause and the proper response to the influx of sargassum honery, sometimes called simply “devil weed.”

A study concluded by the National Fisheries Research & Development Institute concluded that the devil weed that washes up here is the same species as that found in Zhoushan, China. When Mr. Jwa studied that area, he discovered that there was a massive devil weed farming operation there.

He therefore concluded that the local seaweed originates there.

Mr. Jwa said government action was needed by both Korea and China to combat the problem. More of the seaweed from the Chinese farms is expected to wash up on local shores in the future.

제주바다에 대량 유입되며 해안을 점령했던 괭생이모자반이 중국에서 양식하던 것으로 추정되고 있습니다.

제주연구원 좌민석 책임연구원이 발표한 '제주지역 괭생이모자반의 유입 현황과 대응방안' 연구보고서에 따르면 국립수산과학원의 제주연안 괭생이 모자반과 중국 저우산군도의 종이 동일하다는 분석에 따라 이 일대의 해양관련 자료를 조사분석한 결과 저장성에서 대규모로 괭생이 모자반 양식증대사업의 추진을 확인했다고 밝혔습니다.

이에 따라 이곳에서 양식한 모자반이 제주에 흘러들어왔을 가능성이 높은 것으로 추정했습니다.

좌 연구원은 앞으로도 중국에서 양식하는 괭생이모자반의 제주 유입이 예상되는 만큼 한국과 중국 정부 차원의 대안마련이 필요하다고 조언했습니다.
