Motor vehicle deaths increase
Islanders to blame in most accidents

The number of motor vehicle deaths on local roads is soaring this year.

Provincial police say there were about 24-hundred traffic accidents this year through the end of last month. 47 people were killed in those crashes.

That’s almost 50 percent more than the 32 deaths during the same period last year.

Authorities blame unsafe driving for a full 73 percent of the fatalities. They also say that 98 percent of the time, local residents were at fault.

Police have therefore drawn up a 100-day plan to reduce the number of traffic accidents on the island. It includes various promotions and safety campaigns.

교통사망사고 증가…가해자 대부분 '도민'

올 들어 교통사망사고가 크게 증가한 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주지방경찰청에 따르면 올 들어 지난달까지 발생한 교통사고는 모두 2천 400 여건으로 이 사고로 47명이 숨졌습니다.

이같은 사망자자는 지난해 32명에 비해 50% 가까이 증가한 수치입니다.

교통사망사고 원인별로는 안전운전 불이행이 73%로 대부분을 차지했고,
가해자의 98%가 제주도민으로 집계됐습니다.

이에 따라 경찰은 범도민 교통사고 줄이기 100일 계획을 세우고 각종 홍보와 안전캠페인을 강화하기로 했습니다.
