Low-salinity seawater from China enters Jeju waters
Problems expected for aquafarms

Low-salinity seawater from China’s Yangtze River has made it to Jeju and the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula.

The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology has been tracking the patch of water using a satellite.

It has more than three times the chlorophyll content than the average over the past five years. Scientists noticed it around the Ocean Research Station on Ieodo last month, and it has now made it to the mainland and Jeju.

Authorities say the amount of fresh water the Yangtze River is discharging into the ocean recently surged. They expect the resulting low-salinity seawater near the island will cause problems at aquafarms for abalones, clams, and other seafood.

中 저염분수, 제주 북부 해상 유입

중국 양자강 저염분수가 제주와 남해상로 유입되며 피해가 우려되고 있습니다.

한국해양과학기술원은 천리안 해양관측위성을 이용해 양자강 저염분수가 제주와 남해상으로 확산되는 현상을 포착했다고 밝혔습니다.

지난달 말 이어도 해양과학기지 근처에서는 엽록소 농도가 최근 5년 평균치보다 3배 이상 높은 다량의 저염분수가 분포하고 있었으며 일부는 해류를 따라 제주도 북부와 남해안으로 확산됐습니다.

해양위성센터는 최근 양자강 하천수 방출량이 급증했다며 이에 따른 전복이나 조개 등의 양식장 피해가 예상된다고 설명했습니다.
