As we’ve seen in the news in the past few weeks, the summer season has ramped up and every day tens of thousands of people are enjoying Jeju’s beautiful beaches. With so many places to choose from, today on Jeju A to Z, Todd Thacker has picked three northside beaches that are perhaps more to the liking of locals.

[Report] Sand, surf, and especially space. These are some of the most attractive features of Jeju’s beaches. So let’s dive right in with three great examples.

First off: Iho Tewoo Beach, a spot that’s as close and convenient as you can get to the residents of Jeju City.

[Slug CG] Iho Tewoo Beach: Along Olle trail No. 17, with a campground for 500

This two-toned sandy beach along Jeju Olle trail No. 17, is 250 meters long and 120 meters wide. But its average depth and slope is shallow enough for kids to swim safely. Facilities include lifeguards, a changing room, and freshwater showers. Its nearby camp site can support up to 500 people.

[Slug CG] Public transport includes buses 7, 31, and 37

You can get to Iho Beach on buses 7, 31 and 37. But if you’re in a hurry, it’s a short, inexpensive journey by taxi. This picturesque spot is great for just popping by for an hour, or staying the whole day.

[Slug CG] Gwakji Gwamul Beach: One of Jeju’s largest family-friendly beaches

Next is Gwakji Gwamul Beach in Aewol-eup, one of Jeju’s largest, most spacious, and family friendly beaches. It has all the beachgoing amenities, including a playground and freshwater fountain for kids. For swimmers, lifeguards are on duty throughout the day and there’s a nice selection of small restaurants and cafes nearby if you get hungry to need to rehydrate.

[Slug CG] Gimnyeong Beach: Along Olle trail No. 20, Jeju Geotrail

And last but not least, is Gimnyeong Beach, east of Jeju City. It may be relatively small, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in a beautiful, pristine environment.

It is along Olle trail No. 20 and has a 15-kilometer-long Geotrail. The ocean and sand here radiate a beautiful turquoise and white hue. Also, it is popular with scuba divers and majestic sailing vessels pass by on their way to the nearby yacht club.

Swimmers, though, can benefit from on-duty lifeguards, as well as facilities like change rooms, showers, and a convenience store.

All in all, except for perhaps the busiest days of the summer season, Gimnyeong is the perfect, pristine beach you can call all your own.
