Jeju gains authority to directly alert residents to emergencies
Province can now send emergency texts without prior approval from Seoul

The national government on Wednesday gave the provincial government the authority to send out emergency texts to area residents without prior approval from Seoul.

The province can now alert people on the island to forest fires, blackouts, chemical leaks, and other natural disasters and accidents without getting the go-ahead from the national government.

Provincial officials are asking that all area residents sign up for the service.

긴급재난문자 송출권한 '제주 이양'

제주특별자치도가 오늘부터 정부의 긴급재난문자 송출권한을 이양받아 운영에 들어가고 있습니다.

이에 따라 집중호우 등 국지적인 자연 재난이나 산불, 정전, 유해화학물질 유출 등
각종 사고에 대해 중앙정부의 승인 없이도 제주도 차원에서 문자를 발송할 수 있게 됐습니다.

제주도는 현재 운영중인 재난문자서비스를 활용하고 있다며 도민들의 적극적인 참여를 당부하고 있습니다.
