Municipal police ‘likely to be given more authority’
Commissioner general of National Police Agency visits Thursday

The commissioner general of the National Police Agency visited Jeju Thursday and suggested that Jeju Municipal Police will be given more authority in about 100 separate areas.

Lee Chul-sung said in a meeting at the provincial police office that improving the municipal police’s capabilities is part of the national agenda. Mr. Lee added that he would embrace recommendations made by the police reform committee, and work to expand the municipal police’s role beginning in 2019.

He added that he would use part of his revised supplementary budget to hire 40 more municipal police officers, in order to respond to the island’s growing population and tourist numbers.

이철성 경찰청장이 오늘(17일) 제주를 찾아 전국에서 유일하게 운영하고 있는
제주 자치경찰에게 100여 개의 권한을 이양할 수 있다는 뜻을 내비쳤습니다.

이 청장은 오늘(17일) 오전 제주지방경찰청에서 출입기자단과 간담회를 열고
정부가 자치경찰의 전문성을 국정과제에 포함했다며 경찰개혁위원회 권고안을 최대한 수용해 2019년부터 확대된 자치경찰제도가 도입되도록 하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

이와 함께 최근 인구와 관광객 증가로 치안수요가 급증한 제주에 추가경정예산을 통해 경찰관 40명 정도를 보강하겠다고 말했습니다.
