Consumption, construction sector sputter in Q2
Employment up 8% over past year

We’ve got new financial numbers, and they paint a picture of diverging trends.

The National Statistical Office has released a report on second quarter regional economic trends. Overall consumption and sales in Jeju decreased 3.2 percent year on year due to sluggish sales at large retailers and gas stations, as well as fewer car sales.

Meanwhile construction orders dropped 65 percent. That was on the back of a 23 percent decline in the first quarter.

The bright news was employment - 377,000 people on the island had jobs in the second quarter. That’s eight percent more than last year and the largest growth in the nation.

소비·건설시장 '부진'…고용시장 '호조'

제주도내 소비와 건설시장이 부진한 반면 고용시장은 호조세를 보이고 있습니다.

통계청이 발표한 2분기 지역경제동향에 따르면, 제주의 소매.판매는 대형마트와 승용차, 연료소매점 등의 판매 부진으로 지난해 같은기간보다 3.2% 감소했습니다.

도내 건설수주액도 지난 1분기 지난해 같은기간보다 23% 감소한 데 이어 2분기에는 65%로 감소폭이 더 컸습니다.

반면 취업자수는 37만 7천명으로 집계돼 지난해 같은기간보다 8% 증가하며 전국에서 가장 큰 증가폭을 보였습니다.
