Temporary ban on mainland-produced eggs
Local distributors hope to ease consumers’ fear of unsafe eggs

Egg distributors in Jeju have decided to ban shipments to the island of eggs produced on the mainland.

Vice governor Ahn Dong-woo said in a briefing at the provincial office that the decision was made to dispel consumers’ fear of unsafe eggs. Eggs contaminated with harmful insecticides have been found elsewhere in the country.

He said the ban is temporary and that it will remain in place until the issue is resolved.

About 550,000 eggs are distributed on the island daily. Five percent of them are produced in other parts of the nation.

달걀 유통업체 “당분간 다른비장산 반입 중단”

제주도내 달걀 유통업체들이 다른지방산 반입을 중단하기로 했습니다.

안동우 제주특별자치도 정부무지사는 오늘 오전 제주도청 기자실에서 브리핑을 갖고 살충제 달걀 유통에 따른 소비자들의 불안을 해소하기 위해 유통업체간 자율적으로 이같이 결정했다고 말했습니다.

이같은 결정은 살충제 달걀 파동이 안정될 때까지 한시적으로 운영한다는게 업체의 입장이라고 전했습니다.

현재 제주도내에서 하루 유통되는 다른지방산 달걀은 4만 4천개로 전체 55만 2천여톤의 5%를 차지하고 있습니다.
