Organizations band together to create model for Jeju autonomy
Province teams up with JNU, 3 other institutions

The provincial government has signed an agreement with a number of institutions to work at the national level to create a model for increasing Jeju’s autonomy and promoting decentralization in Seoul.

Jeju National University, the Korea Legislative Research Institute, the Korea Research Institute for Local Administration, and the Jeju Research Institute signed the agreement.

The model they create will have as its goals constitutional status for Jeju as an autonomous area. That will be done through revisions to the Jeju Special Law and the expansion of tax exemptions.

Governor Won Heeryong says this group’s eventual success will be a model for achieving balanced regional development.

제주특별자치도와 제주대학교, 한국법제연구원, 한국지방행정연구원, 제주연구원이
연방제 수준의 제주도 자치 분권 모델 구축을 위한 업무 협약을 체결했습니다.

이들 기관은 앞으로 제주도의 헌법적 지위 확보와 연방제 수준의 자치분권 모델 구축을 위한 제주특별법 개정, 그리고 면세 특례 확대 같은 제도 개선에 협력하기로 했습니다.

원희룡 지사는 협약식에서 제주도가 실질적인 지방분권을 선도해 지역 균형발전을 이룰 수 있도록 협력 방안을 모색하겠다고 밝혔습니다 .
