Far fewer foreign fliers after THAAD deployment
67% fewer in July at Jeju International Airport

Jeju International Airport is handling far fewer foreign fliers in the wake of South Korea’s deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system, which China opposes.

According to transport ministry statistics, 98,000 non-Koreans passed through the airport in July ? 67 percent fewer than in July 2016.

Beijing began discouraging or banning group tours to Korea in March. Chinese flights account for such a large percentage of international flights at the island airport that the ministry also says duty-free shop sales there have plummeted 72 percent since then.

중국의 사드 보복 여파로 제주공항 국제선 이용객이 크게 줄었습니다.

국토교통부가 발표한 항공여객 통계에 따르면 지난달 제주공항 국제선 여객은 9만8천명으로 집계됐습니다.

이것은 지난해 7월, 29만 2천명보다 67% 줄어든 것입니다.

국토부는 중국노선의 비중이 높은 제주공항은 지난 3월 중국정부의 사드보복 이후
국제여객과 면세점 매출이 지난해 같은기간보다 각각 72% 감소했다고 분석했습니다.
