Tax breaks for golf courses in Jeju are set to expire this year, but one of Jeju’s representatives at the National Assembly is working to extend them.

Democratic Party representative Kang Chang-il introduced a bill that would extend them until at least 2022.

He argues that a failure to extend the tax breaks would devastate the island’s tourism industry.

Kang cited the Jeju Research Institute, which claims rolling back the breaks would result in 20 percent fewer golfers at local courses. That would in turn trigger a 20 billion won loss to the local economy.

제주도내 골프장에 적용되는 개별소비세 감면제도가 올해 종료될 예정인 가운데 이를 연장하려는 방안이 추진됩니다.

더불어민주당 강창일 의원은 제주도내 골프장 개별소비세 감면기간을 2022년까지 최소 5년 연장하는 내용의 '조세특례제한법 일부개정법률안'을 발의했다고 밝혔습니다.

강 의원은 개별소비세 특례제도가 추가 연장되지 않을 경우 제주 관광산업 전반이 침체를 겪을 수 있다고 배경을 설명했습니다.

제주연구원에 따르면 개별소비세 감면 종료로 골프장 입장객이 20% 감소할 경우 사회 전체의 부가 200억원 이상 줄어들 것으로 분석됐습니다.
