Travel agencies accused of holiday price gouging
National Assemblyman says flight tickets as much as 53% more expensive

One of Jeju’s representatives at the National Assembly wants to crack down on online price gouging for holiday flight tickets.

Democratic Party representative Wi Seong-gon says some travel agencies are selling Jeju-Gimpo tickets for the upcoming holidays for between 116,000 and 149,000 won.

That’s 20 to 53 percent higher than the normal price, which is just 97,700 won.

Mr. Wi blames the transport ministry for doing nothing to stop airlines from giving travel agents first dibs on their tickets. He insists the entire system needs to be improved.

추석 연휴를 앞두고 온라인 상에서 항공권 웃돈 거래가 기승을 부리고 있습니다.

더불어민주당 위성곤 국회의원에 따르면 일부 여행사가 인터넷에서 추석 연휴 기간 제주 김포 항공권을 11만 6천 원에서 14만 9천 원에 판매하고 있습니다.

이는 항공사 정상운임 9만 7천 7백 원보다 20%에서 53% 비싼 가격입니다.

위 의원은 항공사가 명절 항공권을 여행사에 우선 제공하는데도 관리감독기관인 국토교통부는 손을 놓고 있다며 제도개선이 필요하다고 주장했습니다.
