Officials end feasibility study for Jeju-Mokpo underwater tunnel
Jeollanam-do officials say project would lack public support in Jeju

Officials have suspended a feasibility study on the construction of an underwater tunnel that links Jeju and Mokpo.

Jeollanam-do recently directed Seoul National University’s industrial-academic collaboration foundation to cease work on the project.

Officials there determined that the study was inappropriate. They said they would need the support of Jeju residents to build the tunnel, because national funding would be used in its construction. They concluded that that support would be hard to get, as evidenced by the continuing strong opposition to Jeju’s second airport.
