World Taekwondo Hanmadang 2018 preparations begin
Island to host 7,000 competitors from around the globe

The provincial government has begun preparing for its hosting of the World Taekwondo Hanmadang 2018.

The event inspection team has already visited the island to see how the situation stands here. The national government is also planning on boosting its funding for international sports tournaments next year.

Some 7,000 athletes from about 70 countries will compete over four days next July. There will be competitions in 14 disciplines, which are broken down into 59 categories based on sex and age.

Local officials want the island to become a comprehensive center for all things taekwondo and they aim to play a leading role in the creation of cultural content based on the martial art. Doing so is an official national project.

세계 태권도 한마당 행사가 내년 제주에서 열리기로 확정된 가운데 대회 개최를 위한 준비가 본격적으로 추진됩니다.

제주특별자치도는 대회 실사단이 제주를 찾아 점검한데 이어 정부의 내년도
국제경기대회 공모에 참가해 대회 예산을 확보할 계획입니다.

세계 태권도 한마당은 내년 7월 나흘동안 70여 개국에서 7천여 명이 참가해
14개 종목, 59개 부문에서 열띤 경연을 펼치게 됩니다.

특히 제주가 태권도 종합경연장으로 자리매김하는 동시에 국정과제인 태권도의 문화컨텐츠화를 선도하게 될 것으로 주목받고 있습니다.
