Pilot slammed on brakes to avoid another aircraft

The transport ministry is investigating an incident on Friday that created havoc with holiday flights.

A Jeju Air pilot says he slammed on the brakes as he was taxiing to the runway to avoid an aircraft in front of his. That resulted in about an hour-long closure of the runway.

The ministry’s investigator arrived Saturday to look over the communications between the control tower and the pilots involved, as well as the paths the aircraft were taking.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. Friday. The Jeju Air flight was getting ready to take off for Gimhae with 185 passengers aboard.

The incident affected tens of thousands of travelers. The runway shutdown resulted in 16 flights being diverted and delays for over 100 more.

국토부, 제주항공 여객기 급제동 원인조사

어제 오후 발생한 제주항공 여객기 급제동 사건과 관련해 국토교통부가 관제시스템 오류 여부 등을 판단하기 위한 조사에 들어갔습니다.

국토교통부는 오늘(30일) 조사관을 제주에 보내 사건 당시 제주항공 여객기 이동경로를 비롯해 여객기 조종사와 관제탑간 통신 내역을 확인하고 있습니다.

한편, 어제 오후 4시쯤 승객 185명을 태우고 제주에서 김해로 가려던 제주항공 여객기가 전방의 다른 항공기를 보고 급제동하면서 1시간여 동안 활주로가 폐쇄되는 소동을 빚었습니다.

이 사고로 제주로 오려던 여객기 16편이 회항하고 100편이 넘는 여객기가 지연되는 등 이용객 수 만 명이 불편을 겪었습니다.
