As Chinese group tours dry up, so do duty-free sales
Down 20% in Q2

Sales at the island’s duty-free shops and along Baozen Street have fallen considerably since tour groups from China stopped coming to Jeju.

According to the Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea, second quarter duty-free sales in Jeju dropped 20 percent compared to the same period last year.

The same goes for the commercial district around Baozen Street and the underground shopping mall. Sales indexes in both places fell nearly two percent.

The BOK expects no change in Beijing’s virtual ban on group tours to Korea. Analysts therefore predict more tough times for duty-free shops and large retailers.

중국인 단체관광객이 줄면서 면세점과 바오젠거리 상권에 적지 않은 영향을 주고 있습니다.

한국은행 제주지역본부에 따르면 지난 2분기 도내 면세점 매출액은 지난해 같은 기간에 비해 20% 감소했습니다.

바오젠거리 상점가와 지하상가의 소매점 판매액 지수도 2% 가까이 줄었습니다.

한국은행은 중국 당국의 단체 방한 관광금지 조치가 지속되면서 중국인 관광객 소비가 주를 이루는 면세점과 대형마트는 당분간 매출 감소세가 이어질 것으로 전망했습니다.
