Lack of cafeteria space at local elementary schools

One in every five elementary schools in Jeju lacks sufficient cafeteria space for all students to have lunch at the same time, so they have to eat in three shifts.

According to data submitted to the provincial council by the office of education, that’s the lunch program at 21 of the 112 elementary schools on the island.

At some, students have to finish their meals within 20 minutes due to a lack of space and time.

Analysts say more schools will be forced to adopt this kind of schedule as the elementary student population will grow by about 33-hundred over the next five years.

도내 초등학교 5곳 중 1곳 '3교대 급식'

제주도내 초등학교 5군데 가운데 1군데가 식당 공간이 협소해 3교대 급식을 하는 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주도교육청이 제주도의회에 제출한 행정사무감사 자료에 따르면 급식을 하는 도내 112개 초등학교 가운데 21개 학교가 3교대 급식을 하는 것으로 조사됐습니다.

이는 식당 공간이 협소하기 때문으로 일부 학교 학생들은 짧게는 20분 만에 점심식사를 마쳐야 하는 것으로 파악됐습니다.

특히 제주도내 초등학생이 향후 5년간 3천300여명 증가할 것이라는 분석이 나와 3교대 급식은 증가추세를 보일 것으로 전망됩니다.
