(광해군) Gwanghae was the fifteenth king of the Joseon dynasty. He was deposed in a coup in 1623 and confined first on (강화) Ganghwa Island and then in Jeju, where he died in 1641. KCTV Jeju is producing a docudrama about his life here. Joseph Kim reports.

Movie “Gwanghae: The Man Who Became King”

(광해군) Gwanghae was the fifteenth king of the Joseon dynasty and lived the fourth longest among kings of the dynasty.

Gwanghae is a popular character in films

He lived a life of extreme ups and downs, which stimulates film directors’ imagination.

The king’s life and Jeju are deeply connected.

Dethroned by successor King Injo, died in Jeju

He was dethroned by his successor King (인조) Injo and had been exiled from the capital city for 19 years. He was first exiled to (강화) Ganghwa Island and then in Jeju, where he died in 1641.

A total of four monuments that record his achievements have been erected in Jeju. But his life on the island is not well known.

KCTV Jeju produces “Gwanghae, Going to Sea of Light”

KCTV Jeju is producing a documentary film that depicts his life while exiled to Jeju.

He was the only king who was confined to the island.

The documentary film describes his 4 year and 4 month life on the island until he died based on historians’ research and on-site investigations.

It’s too bad that nothing has been written about Gwanghae’s life in Jeju. I believe he affected the politics, economics, and administration of the island.

Will be aired in December

The film will be aired in December and submitted to domestic and international film festivals.

After a 15 year reign, King Gwanghae spent 19 years in exile.
