Plunge in housing construction
22% fewer permits issued through September this year

Officials are issuing far fewer construction permits for new housing, a figure that had been on the rise until last year.

Jeju City issued 2,100 permits through September this year - a full 22 percent fewer than during the first nine months of 2016.

Permits for apartment construction plunged the most at 58 percent, while those for multi-unit buildings fell 40 percent, and those for single family detached houses dropped 19 percent.

Analysts blame a housing supply glut coupled with stricter loan rules and higher interest rates. They say the slowdown will continue for the time being.

주거용 건축허가 급감…감소세 지속될 듯

지난해까지 급증했던 주거용 건물 건축허가 건수가 크게 감소하고 있습니다.

제주시에 따르면, 올들어 지난달까지 주거용 건축물 건축허가 건수는 2천 100여 건으로 지난해 같은 기간보다 22% 감소했습니다.

종류별로는 아파트가 58% 줄어 가장 큰 감소폭을 보였고 연립주택과 다세대주택 40%, 단독주택은 19%가 줄었습니다.

최근 주택공급 과잉과 대출규제 강화, 금리 인상 등의 영향으로 주거용 건축물 감소세는 당분간 이어질 것으로 전망됩니다.
