Jeju: A to Z (Geomi Oreum)
This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at a volcanic cone which despite its unnerving association with spiders is a geological marvel with stunning views of the island from its peak.

[Report]
Some people might be rather put off by any reference to spiders and outdoor activities, but one such volcanic cone on Jeju Island with said name is a very famous site.

Jongdal-ri, Gujwa-eup

Geomi Oreum ? geomi means spider in Korean ? is on the east of the island right in the central plain at Jongdal-ri, Gujwa-eup. The slope is rounded and has layered hills, giving the effect of a spider web, and that's how it got its name.

This 115-meter-tall volcanic formation is quite distinctive because it is comprised of a pyramid-shaped peak, a dome-shaped peak, a funnel-shaped crater, and a basket-shaped crater.

Name derives from its spider-like geological formation

On its spider-like slopes are many smaller oreum. A good number of its sides are steep, but to the northeast there is a relatively gentle slope and a road.

The top, however, is accessible from any direction.

When you climb this oreum, you come to the second funnel crater first. The eastern part from southwest to northeast has hilly areas. It is steep and, at the foot, there are numerous small oreum.

The view is comparable to what you can experience from the top of Hallasan Mountain.

Despite what you might think about this volcanic cone’s original name, the sights from its peak do indeed belie any potential arachnophobia.
