‘Change in sewage treatment facility plans based on politics’
Council members blast province for modifying expansion plan
The provincial council has criticized the provincial government’s downscaling of a planned expansion of the Dodu sewage treatment facility.
During a Monday administrative affairs audit, members of the council’s environment and city committee called the decision political. The original plan was to build underground facilities capable of handling 220,000 of wastewater. Rather than that, the province is moving ahead with a 40,000-ton facility. Councilors further criticized the decision by saying it was merely a temporary solution to the problem and that the government failed to take the seriousness of the issue into account.
They added that it was incomprehensible why the province would reverse course on a project for which the national government had already earmarked funding and for which a study was already underway, even in the face of local opposition.
