Huge drop in permits, as measured by size of projects

The size of projects for which local authorities are issuing construction permits is nosediving.

According to the province, it approved construction covering 220,000 square meters last month. That’s 55% less than in September 2016.

By area, construction permits for commercial buildings plummeted 79 percent from 272,000 square meters last September to only 57,000 last month. By the same metric, permits for housing construction dropped 38 percent.

Local officials blame tougher loan regulations and higher interest rates for the slowdown in the construction industry.

건축허가 면적 큰 폭 감소…상업용 급감

제주도내 건축허가 면적이 큰 폭으로 감소하고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 지난달 건축허가 면적은 22만제곱미터로 지난해 같은 기간 49만 5천여 제곱미터과 비교해 55%나 감소했습니다.

용도별로는 상업용 건축물이 지난해 9월 27만 2천여 제곱미터에서 올해 9월 5만 7천여 제곱미터로 79%나 줄었고 주거용도 전년대비 38% 감소했습니다.

제주도는 대출규제와 금리 상승 여파 등으로 건축경기가 위축될 수 있다고 설명했습니다.
