New rules likely at Jeju beaches
No smoking, no unleashed pets

Local officials will likely be making some new rules for local beaches ? smoking will be banned and pets will have to be leashed.

At a recent meeting of the provincial beach council, officials agreed in principle to those two proposals. They plan to work with local health organizations on how to institute the smoking ban.

In addition to the leash requirement, pets will also no longer be allowed in the water, and their owners will be required to have a bag to clean up any messes they leave behind.

Around 2.8 million people visited Jeju beaches last summer. That’s 30 percent fewer than the year before.

"해수욕장 금연·애완동물 목줄 의무화 추진"

제주도내 모든 해수욕장에서의 흡연이 금지되고 애완동물의 목줄 착용이 의무화될 전망입니다.

제주특별자치도는 최근 해수욕장협의회를 개최하고 해수욕장의 금연구역 지정 건의를 받아들여 보건소 등 유관기관과 협의해 추진하기로 했습니다.

또 애완동물의 경우 입욕을 금지하고 백사장에 출입하기 위해서는 목줄 착용과
대변봉투 지참을 의무화하는 방안을 도입하기로 했습니다.

한편 올해 제주도내 해수욕장을 찾은 이용객은 278만 8천명으로 지난해보다 30% 감소했습니다.
