Developing Jeju into ‘World Environment City’
Lawmaker proposes bill to give legal backing to project

One of Jeju’s representatives at the National Assembly wants to provide a legal framework to develop Jeju into a so-called “world environment city.”

Kang Chang-il’s proposed amendment to the Jeju Special Law stipulates that the provincial government draw up and enforce a basic plan with that as a goal.

The bill also calls for the creation of a World Environment City Support Center to help carry out the work.

Kang also added to Article 1 of the Jeju Special Law that the plan should benefit and be focused on local residents.

제주 세계환경중심도시 육성 법제화 추진

제주특별자치도를 세계환경중심도시로 육성 발전하는 방안이 법제화될 전망입니다.

국회 강창일 의원은 이같은 내용을 담은 제주특별자치도 특별법 개정안을 발의했습니다.

주요내용을 보면 세계환경중심도시 조성의 근거를 마련했으며 이에 따라 제주도는
이에 필요한 기본계획을 수립하고 시행하도록 명문화했습니다.

특히 세계환경중심도시 지원센터를 설립해 각종 업무를 효과적으로 수행할 수 있도록 했습니다.

강 의원은 이와 함께 제주특별법 제1조 목적에 제주도민이 주체가 되고 제주도민의 복리향상을 위한다는 내용을 추가로 담았습니다.
